TFF Paint, or Tiny Fast Free Paint, is a minimalistic image editing and pixel art drawing application.
The goal of TFF Paint is to supersede and replace MS Paint for most use cases by doing the same things in a better way, being more customizable, and to support both Windows and Linux.
TFF Paint is tiny, starts up and closes instantly, and everything is designed to take as few steps as possible.
Notable improvements over MS Paint (not all are implemented yet):
- Optional transparency mode to support transparent images. Support for transparent images to/from the clipboard.
- Much more convenient and versatile color options, hex color input, better color picker tool, easy modification of color swatches.
- Streamlined UI. Less clicks required, but MORE features, not less.
- Canvas can be resized from all sides, not just right and bottom. The canvas handles also follow the screen, so you don't have to be at the middle of the canvas to use them.
- Interpolation settings (linear, nearest neighbor) when stretching/shrinking the image or a selection.
- Paint bucket supports non-contiguous mode, also known as color replacement mode. It also has a tolerance setting so tiny changes in color won't stop it from filling.
- Your tool and color settings will be remembered from the last time you opened the program.
- Helpful tooltips that teach you everything there is to know about tools and settings.
- Customizability for the program's behavior, tools, and UI colors/layout.
- New and custom file formats can be added with plugins, instructions included (for people who are familiar with programming).
- Zoom out without an annoying sharpening effect.
Intentionally removed features:
- No email, print, or scanner related features. I really don't think this is the right kind of program to use for those, and I don't want to implement them anyway.
- No rulers. I've always seen them as a weird and mostly useless holdover from before digital tools, you can measure things more precisely with selection tools and cursor position.
- No "fancy" brushes, pixelated ones only. MS Paint's brushes have always been crappy, they don't really work with this kind of program. If you want to make paintings then you should use a program with proper painting tools like Krita or Paint.NET.
Current status
TFF Paint is not finished and I don't recommend using it. I'm mostly publishing it for the sake of my own mind. It is usable for basic things but some major features are still missing:
- Gradient tool, Text tool, Shape/line tools, Custom vector shapes, Canvas grids, Swatch management, Dither/pattern settings.
- Selection tools are very unfinished, you can only cut/copy the selection but that's it.
- Canvas settings, resizing, ability to toggle transparency on/off.
- More file formats. Currently only PNG and JPG are supported, and even those not completely.
- Settings for exporting files (such as JPG quality), currently some default settings are used.
- Better support for small window size, and fixes to other related issues. I may completely redo the UI code at some point.
Linux version is planned.
Mac version not planned.
